A Four-Module Online Course with Miles Neale, PsyD

TIBETAN BUDDHISM

A Path of Becoming Fully Human

COURSE SUMMARY

We are witnessing a time of great geo-political, economic and ecological upheaval. At the same time a spiritual revolution is emerging, with burgeoning interest in methods for expanding human consciousness. As more people grow dissatisfied with materialistic culture, and taste the benefits of meditation, yoga, and plant medicines many are becoming increasingly committed to the deeper contemplative sciences and embodied philosophies that underpin these practices.

This four-part course surveys Tibetan Buddhism, specifically it’s unique practices of visualization, renunciation, and compassion grounded in its scientific world-view of interdependence.  The course asks not only how do Buddhists understand and relate to our current global predicament but invites you to personally consider how to become fully human. Each class will address the most salient existential questions we each face: how to learn, how to let go, how to love and how to lead. Content is presented through an interdisciplinary lens, using the idiom of psychotherapy and neuroscience to make ancient principals and practices even more relevant to our modern mindset.

COURSE OUTLINE

MODULE #1: Visualization

How do we hasten learning? This lecture introduces a foundational, pre-tantric meditation practice common to all forms of Tibetan Buddhism called role-modeling visualization. We will review the Six Preliminaries that structure a daily meditation practice and provide a psychological basis for the unique role mentor-archetypes and creative imagery play in spiritual development. We will experience how visualization serves as a virtual reality or organic flight simulator that quickens integration of the principals presented in the subsequent classes.

MODULE #2: Renunciation

How do we skillfully let go? This lecture introduces the foundational principals of Tibetan Buddhism called the Four Mind Turnings. Reflecting deeply on the preciousness of human life, death and impermanence, causality and the defects of compulsive life facilitates a dramatic and necessary reorientation away from hedonic pursuits that never fully satisfy us and towards genuine spiritual liberation.

MODULE #3: Compassion

How do we maturely love? This lecture continues from the basis of self-care and personal liberation and pivots towards the development of universal compassion and social transformation. We will follow an ancient psychology called the Four-point Exchange of Self and Other that typify the heroic outlook and pro-social behavior of the Bodhisattva, determined to reorient his or her life not towards escaping from the world but towards greater altruism within it.

MODULE #4: Wisdom

How do we wisely lead? This final lecture explores the view of interdependence that underlies the Buddhist activities of meditation, renunciation and altruism previously covered in the series. Consistent with findings from neuroscience and quantum physics, the Buddhist principal of emptiness is not a nihilistic black hole to be feared, but a pregnant womb of possibility in any given moment to discover that allows for creative engagement with the world. We will review different levels of understanding emptiness, it relationship with karmic causality, and how it empowers altruistic leadership.
